Susan M. Meyer, 99, of Sparta, died Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at the Morrow Memorial Home, Sparta. She was born on October 23, 1907 to Robert & Matilda (Cox) Hillyer. She grew up in the Wilton area. She graduated from Wilton High School in 1926 and trained to be an elementary teacher at what is now the UW-La Crosse. She then taught for ten years at Enders, West Beaver Creek, and Progressive Schools in the Sparta area. After her marriage to Otto Meyer on December 26, 1936 she retired from teaching but substitute taught in Sparta schools after Otto’s death in 1958. She never forgot the joy of teaching and often said the biggest regret of her life was not teaching for many more years. She is survived by her son, Gale Meyer of Middleton, WI; one step-grandaughter, Eleanor (Raymond) Jerome; Eleanor’s children, Michael, Lynn, and Jodi; Jodi’s children, Chris, Tony and Jessica; she is further survived by nieces and nephews in Wisconsin: John Dougherty, Mary Ann Geier, Joyce Rugen, Rosella Vitous, George Dougherty, Ethel Denton, and Mary Jane Karis; two special nieces living out of state are Isabelle Baker of North Carolina, and Edith Brinkerhoff, of Colorado. She was also survived by many other wonderful nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto; her parents; and eight brothers and sisters: William, Walter, Faye, Vern, Oswin, Ellen, Edith and Elizabeth (Dougherty); as well as many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, October 14, 2007 at the United Methodist Church, Sparta, with Reverend David Carlson officiating. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta. Family and friends are invited to call at the church on Sunday from 1 p.m. until time of services. The Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta, is assisting the family with arrangements. |
