Oma La Vera (Husker) Smith passed away on October 31, 2008 at Wilson Health Care Center, Gaithersburg, Maryland at the age of 91. Oma was born on December 31, 1916 in Ottervale, WI to John Husker and Florence Elma Roberts, and grew up in the log cabin home of her parents. She attended Ottervale School, graduated La Farge High School in 1935 and Viroqua Normal School in 1937. She became a teacher and taught all 8 grades at White City Schoolhouse, Salem Ridge Schoolhouse, Upper Weister Schoolhouse, Lower Chipmunk Schoolhouse and Buckeye School. She wed Roy Kenneth Smith on April 25, 1948 and they were happily married for 56 years. They farmed in the Cashton area for many years before moving to Sparta in 1967. She was a member of the United Brethren Church for many years, belonged to the Homemakers Club, the Veterans Help Organization and had many good friends. She was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by her family. She is survived by her 3 daughters, Darlene Ann Virovatz of Scottsdale, AZ, Ilene Marvel Knight of Norwalk, WI and Sharon Joy Wagman of Ijamsville, MD; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren and many friends and caring neighbors. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Roy Kenneth Smith; her son, Kenneth Roy Smith, her sisters Alma Florence Kroll and Marvel La Veta Ambrose; and her 2 brothers, Leslie Noel Husker and Branson Keith Husker. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 8, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta. Burial will be in Star Cemetery, La Farge, WI. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Saturday from 1 p.m. until time of services. The Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements. |
