Hilbert A. Steyer, 88, of Sparta went to be with his lord from his home on Thursday, September 14, 2006. He was born on December 28, 1917 in Slope County, North Dakota to Henry and Emma (Ryder) Steyer. He grew up in North Dakota and married Ellen Peterson on May 9, 1942. He was drafted in the U.S. Army on October 2, 1942. He served 3 years, 3 months, and 3 days. After the service he farmed in the Sand Creek area, rural Sparta for 25 years. Hilbert married Helen Blanke on August 14, 1996 in Sparta. He retired due to his health and moved to Arizona for 30 years. He moved back to Sparta in 2004 to be near his children. He was a member of the American Legion Post 100 and the D.A.V. One of his great loves was his horses. He is survived by his wife, Helen of Sparta; six sons, Charles (Lynette) Steyer and James (Lynn) Steyer all of Sparta, Lee (Tammy) Steyer and Lowell (Marsha) Steyer all of Soldiers Grove, WI, Hilbert (Cheryl) Steyer of Gillett, PA, Terry (Cindy) Steyer of Glen Rock, PA; one daughter, Mary (Robert) Treu of Sparta; three step children, Dickie (Steve) Dreilling of Halstead, KS, Penny Ozbun of Newton, KS, and Michael Blanke of Russell, KS; 17 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandson; 11 step grandchildren, and 11 step great grandchildren He was preceded in death by his parents; his 1st wife, Ellen; an infant daughter; an infant son; four sisters, Wilma, Luella, Evelyn, Bernice, and a granddaughter, Shannell Steyer. Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at New Life Assembly of God Church, Sparta with Reverend Randy Williamson and Reverend Richard Krocka officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by V.F.W. Post 2112 and American Legion Post 100 will be in the Leon Cemetery, Leon. Friends may call at the Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta on Sunday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. The Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
