Condolences

Edwin C. Christopherson

           Edwin C. Christopherson, 98, of Sparta died Thursday, November 22, 2007 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. He was born in a log house on the home farm in the Town of Leon, Monroe County, Wisconsin, on August 7, 1909 to Hans Peter and Clara (Erickson) Christopherson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at the Fish Creek Ridge Church. He attended the Pleasant Valley School and graduated from 8th grade. He worked the home farm until 1930 when he and his brother Gilmer bought a milk truck. They worked together until 1934 when Gilmer rented a farm and got married.

     Ed married Edith Cole of Sparta on August 20, 1935 and moved to Sparta. He worked at the Wisconsin Child Center as a meat cutter until it closed and after that was caretaker and bookkeeper for Mt. Hope Cemetery until his health failed in 1999. He continued as a director for the Cemetery Board until his death.

     Ed served on the Board of Directors of Sparta Coop Oil Company for 26 years. He became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Sparta in 1945. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, the Sons of Norway, and the Sparta Rod and Gun Club.

     He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, and small game hunting for over 50 years. He especially enjoyed yearly fall trips to Superior, Wisconsin, to visit the Moe family, but most of all, he enjoyed the trip to Norway to visit his father’s birthplace.

     He is survived by his wife, Edith of Sparta; two daughters, Judith of La Crosse, Nancy (Paul) Oswald of Sparta; special grandson, Jared Oswald, and wife, Becky of Sparta; two great granddaughters, Hayley and Libby of Sparta, and numerous wonderful relatives and friends.

     He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Caroline; a brother, Gilmer, and a sister-in-law, Mildred.

     Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sparta with Reverend Jeffrey Wm. Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Sparta.

     Friends may call at the Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta on Sunday from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

     Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church, Morrow Memorial Home or Gundersen Lutheran Hospice.
