Allan L. Johnson, 72, of Sparta died early Sunday January 1, 2006 at the Morrow Memorial Home, Sparta. He was born on November 9, 1933 in the Town of Little Falls, Monroe County, Wisconsin to George L. and Marion (Christenson) Johnson. He attended Cataract State Graded School and graduated from Sparta High School in 1951. A Korean War Veteran, Allan served four years in the U.S. Navy from 1951 until 1955, serving on two Aircraft Carriers, the USS Valley Forge and the USS Midway, and was in the Naval Reserve until December of 1959. Allen graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in June of 1960. He taught high school biology, and University zoology and botony in Stevens Point before getting into laboratory and greenhouse operations at the University. In that capacity he developed teaching demonstration exercises. His expertise he brought to the University of Montana in 1975 and served as a Horticulturist in the Department of Botany. He was in charge of the botany stock room, greenhouse, surrounding gardens and the one acre experimental gardens on South Ave in Missoula. On March 15, 1980, he married Donna Elam of Missoula. They enjoyed traveling, gardening, composting , and had their own greenhouse in their backyard. Allan became a resident of the Morrow Memorial Home on September 29, 2001. He was a past member of the Daneville 4-H Club, and a member of the V.F.W. Post in Missoula, Montana. He is survived by a brother, Melvin (Marion) Johnson of Bloomington, MN; two sisters, Norma Fenske of Sparta, Beatrice Morgan of Sparta; a sister-in-law, Ada Johnson of Yerington, NV; nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna on November 11, 2000; his parents; a brother, Malcolm on September 13, 2000; brothers-in-law, Arthur Fenske, Harley Morgan, and a niece, Jeanette Fenske. Memorial services will be Saturday January 14, 2006 at 11 a.m. at the Cataract United Methodist Church with Reverend Benito Agtarap officiating. Burial with Full Military Honors provided by the V.F.W. Post 2112 will be in the Cataract Cemetery, Cataract. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Memorials may be given to the Cataract United Methodist Church or the Morrow Memorial Home. The Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
