LaVanche passed away at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wisconsin, where she had been receiving treatment for age related illnesses for the two weeks preceding her death.

LaVanche, born April 2, 1921, was 90 years old.  She was the firstborn child of Helmer and Nilda Ramsey Hendrickson.  She was followed by sisters Naomi and Janella, and brother Allen.  The family was raised in the Melrose area and LaVanche was a graduate of the Melrose High School Class of 1938.  She attended the celebration of the 70th class reunion in 2008.  LaVanche attended graduate business classes at the La Crosse Technical College.  She married Kenneth John Berry on April 27, 1940, at the French Creek Church in Trempealeau County.  The couple purchased their farm in the town of New Lyme, Monroe County, on March 1, 1951.  The farm was approximately 200 acres and the couple eventually expanded the farm to around 400 acres.  They operated the farm together until Kenneth died on February 23, 1987.  LaVanche also worked off the farm as a nurse's aide and therapist aide at the Rolling Hills Nursing Home in Sparta, where she affectionately gained her nickname of "Sarge" from fellow employees.  She had many stories to tell of her twenty years of service there.  LaVanche remained on the farm after Kenneth's death, and lived alone there for twenty-five years after her husband's passing.  She enjoyed hosting friends and family.  She was an avid gardener, and was an excellent cook and baker.  LaVanche loved bird watching, especially her favorite "cardinals", and she took care of a host of cats that always found food and milk at her door.  She would often wonder aloud where the cats came from and why they kept coming.  LaVanche also enjoyed embroidering, fishing, and baking lefse for family and friends.  She enjoyed traveling to functions such as smelt fryes, lutefisk dinners, and family functions.  She attended hundreds of birthday parties and celebrated her own 90th birthday last April in Cataract with a party which was attended by hundreds of friends and family members.  LaVanche spoke only her heritage, Norwegian, until the first grade, when she learned English as her second language.

LaVanche was active until her recent hospitalization on January 10, 2012.  She drove herself to Cataract most days where she enjoyed senior citizen lunches with her friends, and she frequently traveled to Sparta and Black River Falls to shop, see her doctor, and get her hair done.
